This research is identifying experimental factors that influence the quality of samples and measurements that are taken of the sludge within the legacy ponds on the Sellafield site. By understanding the impact that variability, sludge sampling equipment and measuring system has on results, the quality of the data and the types of sampling regime required to accurately characterise the ponds can be obtained. The research is focusing on the in-situ and ex-situ measurement of particle size distribution (PSD) as an indicator of the physical properties of sludge.

His research is focused on quantifying the effects of influence factors on sludge characterisation using statistical tools to analyse results obtained. This involves the simulation and experimentation of sludge sampling and particle size analysis campaign techniques. The research also seeks to design an autonomous system that deploys existing technologies for in-situ particle characterisation in an underwater radioactive environment.
Developing the next generation of nuclear decommissioning robotics research. Working in partnership with the nuclear sector and other universities around the UK and EU to reduce risk, accelerate productivity and reduce long term costs.
