June 2018 User Group Meetings
The first RAIN user group meetings took place in early June 2018. The RAIN Hub strives to solve industry lead challenges, moving technologies into Technology Readiness Levels 6/7. To do this, it is essential we engage with a variety of end users, regulatory bodies and the supply chain. These first two events focused on Remote Inspection and Remote Handling and had over 50 attendees from a mixture of partners. A mixed set of delegates enabled great discussions with a wide range of perspectives. There will be another workshop discussing the nuclear safety case in September.
The remote handling event took place at the NAMRC in Rotherham, giving us an opportunity to take a tour of their workshop and the extensive facilities available. We focused on current challenges that could be solved using remote handling technologies – relating to gloveboxes in particular – the barriers to these solutions, and how to overcome them.
The remote inspection event was held at RACE and included a tour of JET and the remote inspection and handling technologies commonly used there. As remote inspection is required so broadly it was particularly useful to hear about specific challenges and what the solutions might look like.
Both workshops were incredibly useful to the RAIN Hub and we are grateful to the participants. The results of these discussions will inform the direction of the RAIN working groups.
